Okay, I purchased this book at supanova (kinda like comic con just in Commonwealth of australia) and Daniel Falconer was there! Not only is this book super astonishing for us Hobbit/LOTR nerds but he signed it besides!! 🎉🎉
This is the fourth of these books I have purchased and read from Weta (three books on the Hobbit movies and i on Narnia) and accept enjoyed every one of them! Excellent pictures, insightful text, excellent pictures ... This is the quaternary of these books I have purchased and read from Weta (iii books on the Hobbit movies and one on Narnia) and have enjoyed every i of them! Excellent pictures, insightful text, excellent pictures ... I have to say that twice because that'southward what makes these books so great: detailed photos of objects glimpsed only briefly in the films and pre-product drawings of objects and moments from the films.I was a footling surprised that I enjoyed this volume so much because I was more than a petty disappointed in the pic. "Desolation of Smaug" is a fun movie, but it bears little resemblance to the text of Tolkien's novel "The Hobbit". Yes, I know that nearly movies depart from the text, but after "The Lord of the Rings", I had such promise!
Anyway, after reading this volume, I went back and saw "Desolation of Smaug" and, while I'm notwithstanding frustrated by the movie, I accept a much better appreciation for what was done in it and the detail the craftsmen and women put into every scene. As a wanna-be artist myself, I look at so much of the artwork in this book and am impressed non only with the skill, just too a little envious because non only can I not paint like that, many times I can't even Call up like that! The text of the volume, which consists mostly of quotes from the artists who rendered the paintings, drawings and sculptures depicted, gave me an appreciation for how they were able to have a printed idea and expand on it in amazing ways.
[Note: I didn't DISLIKE "Desolation of Smuag". information technology just wasn't the flick I would have wanted from the volume. But it is a fun movie!]

This is a gorgeous volume. Its beautifully leap and filled with awesome drawings, paintings, and CG renderings. It goes through the unabridged 2nd Hobbit movie showing Beorn's house and various iterations of his pattern. Its interesting reading their thought processes as they iterated on many of the designs for the film. I of course hated all the pages devoted to laketown'due south master and Alfrid characters, because FUCK those guys and their shitty additions. Removing them entirely would do nothing but brand the movies stronger as every 2d they are on screen the audience's eyes are collectively rolling.
I as well would accept liked to meet more than photographs of the physical props, sets, and locations built for the film. Again this cloth defective in this book is another symptom of the Hobbit films missing the charm of the original LoTR trilogy.
Either fashion, the artwork is cute in this volume and I'd recommend it to anyone who was a fan of the movies and the artistry that went into making them.

Much like the final Art and Pattern book for The Hobbit, I idea this was fantastic and among the all-time fine art books you lot can buy. The blueprint of the book, from the encompass to each individual page is cute. Information technology doesn't hurt that Pathos of Smaug has a lot of really interesting blueprint choices from Mirkwood, the elves, Dale, and fifty-fifty Smaug who briefly appears at the terminate. His character was so well done and the fact that they reproduced it hither is equally amusing and impressive. It is rare to find a book that I can't find any faults with and this one is highly recommended to Hobbit fans or anyone who wants to see fantasy design. ...more
Magnificent, and really inspirational. The art in this is so incredibly gorgeous. 1 of the pages about ancient Dale made me gasp when I saw it for the first time. Sketches in item, coloured in or not, have this power to trigger the imagination like nothing else. Gorgeous book equally usual, and an essential read.
Fantastic. So much piece of work was put into the production of these movies, and this book detailed a portion of it all. Information technology's amazing to think of all the piece of work that was done merely there is no record of it.
I liked reading picayune tidbits of information like how Bilbo had a chess piece from Beorn back in a chest in Pocketbook Terminate... if you were paying attending.
Which I will have to look for next time! Fantastic. And then much work was put into the product of these movies, and this book detailed a portion of information technology all. Information technology'south amazing to think of all the work that was done only there is no tape of it.

I loved this volume because it is adventures and a page turner. It is unfortunate that the film was very far of the book and the details were skimmed. I recommend the book over the film it is filled with hazard and the characters are out of this earth!
Lots of artwork with information about creative processes backside them and how some things ended up in the movie and some not. A affect of more information and pictures almost Smaug would had been prissy, just still this was an interesting book to read and to look. 4 stars.
Questi libri sono sempre bellissimi da sfogliare, le foto east i disegni sono curatissimi. I promise nosotros will see this person in the extended cut of office 2. My only disappointment is that Smaug, the star of the film gets about four pages tops in the volume. A book devoted solely to Smaug is forthcoming in 2014 forth with another Chronicle book entitled Cloaks and Daggers due at the time of my writing this review in July of 2014. I think information technology is incorrect enough spreading these art books into two volumes for each movie when ane sufficed for each pic in the LOTR trilogy fine art books, only to have to beat out out some other twenty or more dollars for an boosted 96 pages that could accept been included in this book or split between the two, feels like a cash grab and that is my principal reason for deducting a star in my rating for this book. This encapsulates all the precise detail and endeavor put into this second installment of The Hobbit. I loved reading the commentary of what inspired the various location props, costumes, and architecture. I'd like to see how information technology went from the first of del Toro's sketch notes to further concepts done with Howe and Lee (then nether management from Peter Jackson) to exist fully fleshed out for the movies. Overall, with all these amazing concepts I can't wait to meet how this trilogy winds down. ...more
As I'm reading these fine art books for The Hobbit movies, I'm realizing how tragic it is that they completely failed at making them proficient. In that location are things that are such good ideas and intentions that aren't borne out at all in the movies: such weird things they cite that the movies then fail at. For example, they talk about how Jackson wanted new designs for the orc and elves because he didn't want people to see the same things on the screen. Brand it ugly, no ane cares.Just so he goes and does the exact same story beat of Arwen saving Frodo with Tauriel saving Kili… complete with Athelas… complete with "kingsfoil? That's a weed!" Which doesn't even brand SENSE. Considering Frodo was stabbed with a Morgul bract, an aboriginal and magical blade, and was turning into a wraith as the men of quondam who were corrupted by the spiritual being Sauron. Kili was hit with an orc arrow.
The art is great, simply these books make the films worse.

In one case again, a great behind the scenes look at the Hobbit film. This time it'due south the Desolation of Smaug (part 1), as there is a Chronicles Four which covers more of the film. Always interesting to get the perspective of the cracking craftsmen that put a movie like this together. Lots of cool art, pictures, and inside tidbits from the movie.
